Description
175-176 AD (regnal year 16) Marcus Aurelius drachm from Alexandria, EgyptObverse: Laureate bust of Marcus Aurelius right
Reverse: Marcus Aurelius in military dress standing facing, head left, holding patera over lighted altar; to right, Roma (probably) standing left, holding wreath over the Emperor's head
Diameter ~31mm
Weight 24.96g
Acquired from Naville Numismatics, according to which this example is from Giovanni Dattari's famed collection and appears as coin 9222 in Dattari-Savio Plate 183 (I have not confirmed).
Extremely rare, with only 3 specimens listed in RPC (RPC IV.4, 16585), of which this is the 1st. RPC identifies example 3 (which has an inferior reverse and is unusually light) as being from Dattari, though that wouldn't preclude this example from also hailing from the same collection, as Dattari owned many duplicates.
