    Description

Ancient Roman-Greek Imperial Caracalla & Geta. AE 35 of Caria, Stratonicea. Obv: Busts of Caracalla and Geta facing (Geta officially removed), counterstamped with a small head. Reverse: Hekate standing.
Following the murder of Geta by his brother Caracalla in 212 AD, a "damnatio Memoriae" was decreed in which all reference to Geta was to be erased from the record. This included many of the Greek Imperial coins of Asia which were issued in the join names of the two brothers. Geta's effigy and inscription were carefully chiseled from the coin: It was counterstamped and returned into circulation.
