Description
This magnificent late 1800's-very early 1900's lost wax cast bronze figure of a Great Dane represents the final flowering of the French animalier tradition which reached its clulmination in barye and Isidore Bonheur. Measuring 13" x 7 1/2" x 6 1/2" overall, the work is wonderfully naturalistic with superbly finished details and construction and very unusual grey-brown-green patina. It is signed H. Peyrol and bears the tiny Peyrol foundry stamp on the back. Francois Auguste Hippolyte Peyrol (Jr.) was the son of one of France's most prominent Fondeurs whose clients numbered both Isadore and Rosa Bonheur as well as the estate of Antoine-Louis Barye. Hippolyte studied sculpture with his father (who was himself a pupil of Fremiet and Barye) and under his uncle Isadore Bonheur and later ran the family foundry until its closing ca. 1927. This casting has construction suggesting a date just before of just after 1900 and is in very nice, untouched condition with dust in the details and a tiny golden rub in the patina as shown in close-up.WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO SHIP WORLDWIDE IF ALLOWED BY USPS.
