Description
Judaea; Caesaria Panias Prutah - Very Rare!. This minute Judaean coin was produced in Caesaria Panias, in ancient Judaea, by the Mediterranean Sea. It is 1.cm in diameter, weighs 1.25 g and was probably struck during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. It was part of the Shoshana collection, which contained the unique year one shekel prototype which sold for over a million dollars. This coin last sold at a public auction in 2012 (Heritage 3018, lot 20479). The obverse (second photo) shows what is described as the head of the god Pan, but it appears to be very crude. The reverse (first photo) depicts Syrinx. According to Roman legend, the god Pan was enamored of the nymph Syrinx, but she rebuffed his advances. She ran to the river and asked her sister nymphs for help. They changed her into hollow water reeds which made a haunting sound when Pan's frustrated breath blew across them. He cut them and fashioned the first Pan pipes from them.
