Description

Trajan, 98-117 AD, bronze of 26.2 mm, 11.65 grams. Struck at the mint of Sepphoris in the Galilee.

Reverse:
ΣEΠΦΩ /
PHN
Ω
N in a wreath.
Reference: Sofaer 1.
This is the largest coin in a denominational series struck at Sepphoris under Trajan. It seems possible that at the time the city had a largely Jewish council, which resulted in having reverse coins without any pagan imagery. Also worth noting that the complete obverse inscription on this coin is unique in numismatics. We do not know what the Emperor Trajan "gave" but perhaps it was a certain amount of autonomy or other favor to this city.
