    Description

RARE Roman Coin AE Medallion ELAGABALUS (217-222 A.D.)
Look at this ! Don't miss it!
Here is a unique find - an exceptional bronze medallion of Elagabalus, mint in the wealthy metropolis of Philipopolis, Thrace
The Emperor's bust is turned right on the obverse, dressed with military uniform, bearing radiate crown
On the reverse there is a temple with 8 columns in front view. Perhaps it represents the temple of Apollo, built to celebrate the Olympic Games in 213 A.D., which took place in the city
Medallions and other large colonial AE coins of Philipopolis from the time of Caracalla and Elagabalus are popular among collectors worldwide. The diversity of these coins is stunning. Reverse types with temples of four or six columns are designated in the catalogs as very rare and extremely rare. But reverse with 8 front columns (Octastyle temple) is not recorded in the numismatic literature. THIS IS AN UNIQUE COIN, as this type was never found previously
This coin is a part of an outstanding collection acquired over decades from a doctor's family here in Houston. We were told that this family obtained the coin back in the 1980's from a private sale in Austria. It was pointed as a unique coin back then, but never shown to the public until now. We are pleased to offer part of this collection on their behalf
    AUTHENTICITY UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED!!!
    Measurements:
    Approx. 35/36 mm; 23.6 grams
    Condition:
VF+++; It is in its original condition and probably slight cleaning (specially in the area of the bust) will enhance the relief and the whole appearance of the obverse. Nice dark even patina; relatively high relief on both sides. Very well centered on both sides. No missing or damaged letters. All in all a very desirable specimen for an advanced collection
